Traffic SignalAdvanced Network Systems helps the City of Charlottesville Launch its New Intelligent Transportation System

The Challenge:

The City of Charlottesville historically used dialup connectivity to manage some of its existing traffic controllers throughout the city. But, the minimal bandwidth provided by dialup connections limited the City’s ability to quickly manage and monitor traffic conditions in the city. In an effort to improve upon its existing system, the City set out to upgrade its network infrastructure to better support the existing traffic control system. The solution needed to be capable of supporting the data transfer of seven (7) traffic controllers (type 170) and two (2) MPEG4 capable video cameras back to the City’s Traffic Control center. A key issue associated with the project was that whatever the technology solution, the system had to be capable of expanding throughout the City of Charlottesville, with out loss of signal despite any existing conditions, such as buildings, trees or other forms of interference.

The Solution:

Advanced Network Systems provided the necessary design, equipment and installation services to enable the required transmission of data to and from existing traffic control signals and cameras located in and around the City. The system designed by Advanced Network Systems was engineered to supply wireless data connectivity to each designated traffic control and video surveillance site. The video surveillance portion of the solution was Ethernet equipped, and traffic IP-protocol based, making it highly effective for transmitting streaming video sufficient for both the City’s current and future needs.
